Around 2,400 kids ages 10-17 live in Highland Village, Texas. About 250 of them probably experienced suicidal thoughts this year. Nearly 400 had at least one major depressive episode.
This is concerning, and these kids deserve help so they can live full, meaningful lives. The teen mental health treatment we offer at Bricolage is tailored to every individual child who walks through our doors. We support their growth and help them get better, in every meaning of the word. We’ll tell you more about what we do, and why our care has changed the lives of so many Highland Village teens.
While searching for treatment options, you’ve likely seen many centers calling themselves “evidence-based.” This means their approaches are proven by trustworthy research and have helped teens achieve better mental health. Bricolage is no exception to this. Every therapy method we offer is backed by real results, ensuring your teen puts their time and energy into treatments that truly work.
Evidence-based care is essential, but recovery goes beyond research-backed methods. It’s also about learning practical, healthy skills teens can use to improve their mental health and daily life. We personalize the skills we teach based on each teen’s situation, and we keep practicing these skills until they feel second nature.
Here are some of the key skills your teen may develop and strengthen at Bricolage:
Bricolage has several great qualities. We’ll cover just a few.
It’s one thing for teens to learn a skill in therapy – applying it in real life is a whole different story. That’s why we make sure every teen at Bricolage gets dedicated time to actively practice the skills they’ll need outside of treatment.
Our approach isn’t about constantly pointing out what teens are doing wrong. It’s important to recognize habits or thoughts that aren’t helpful, but it’s just as crucial to notice and reinforce what teens are doing right. We build on their strengths, creating lessons and strategies that help teens feel seen and supported. Whenever we address an unhelpful habit, we always offer a concrete, healthy alternative, making it easier to let go of old patterns and develop better ones.
Every treatment plan at Bricolage is uniquely tailored to fit each teen’s strengths and more challenging areas. Your teen will receive care that is as individual as they are.
At Bricolage, we take a whole-person approach to teen mental health. Every part of your child’s brain works together to shape their thoughts, feelings, and outlook. That means real healing requires attention to all areas, not just the ones linked to specific symptoms.
Family support is a crucial part of a teen’s recovery. Your involvement during treatment and beyond makes a powerful difference. Understanding how to best help your child isn’t always obvious, so our day program includes family therapy sessions where parents and caregivers learn practical skills to use in daily life. These benefits extend not only to your child, but to your entire family.
No matter which level of care your teen participates in, our team stays in close contact throughout the process. We keep you updated on their progress and give you guidance on how to encourage and support them as they move forward in their mental health journey.
At Bricolage, our experienced team includes psychiatrists, nurses, and a range of dedicated professionals ready to support your teen’s mental health journey. We understand that delivering the best care means constantly learning and evolving. That’s why we are committed to ongoing professional growth, regularly integrating the latest research to ensure we provide the most effective, evidence-based treatments tailored to your teen’s needs.
Bricolage has two main programs for adolescents: our intensive outpatient program (IOP) and our day treatment, commonly called a partial hospitalization program (PHP).
Both programs can be life-changing for teens, but which one works best for your child will depend on what they need and their goals. Our chart below will walk you through it.
| What’s The Program? | What Does a Week Look Like? | How Long Does It Last? | Who Benefits Most? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intensive outpatient (IOP) | Three-hour meetings three days a week. Weekly health check-in and medication check-in. Various therapies based on your teen’s recovery goals, including whole-group therapy. | Depends on your teen’s needs, but six weeks on average. Can be adjusted as needed, and there’s no “wrong” timeline. | Teens who need treatment, but want to remain in traditional schooling the majority of the time. They are healthy enough to function safely in their regular life and apply the skills they learn in therapy right away. |
| Partial hospitalization/day program (PHP) | Six-hour days, five days a week. Weekly health check-in and medication check-in twice weekly. Two hours of academic support time daily. Various therapies based on your teen’s recovery goals, including whole-group therapy and family therapy. | Depends on your teen’s needs, but six weeks on average. Can be adjusted as needed, and there’s no “wrong” timeline. After the conclusion of PHP, teens will attend IOP, coming out to a total of 12 weeks of treatment on average. | Teens in need of a more intensive, structured treatment plan. Their mental health may interfere significantly enough that attending regular school isn’t reasonable. |
At Bricolage, we aren’t limited to set diagnoses. We welcome any teen looking to achieve better mental health, no matter what condition(s) they do or don’t have. Here are just some of the things we treat:
We treat a lot outside of this, too! If your teen’s symptoms aren’t listed here, please contact us anyway. We’re here to help.
We can and do provide mental health diagnoses at Bricolage. However, those diagnoses aren’t our primary focus. Instead, we focus on the “why” behind the symptoms and diagnosis, and conquer that.
Why is this our approach?
Bricolage is one-of-a-kind, and we’re not just saying that! Here are some of the qualities that set us apart from any other facility in the country.
Group therapy shown in movies often features people sitting in a circle, waiting for their turn to share. This approach can feel passive or dull for many teens. At Bricolage, our whole-group therapy is much more engaging and interactive. We structure each session to keep teens involved at every step, minimizing downtime and maximizing participation.
When a therapist meets individually with a teen, others are active too, filling out worksheets, practicing skills in pairs, or working together in small groups. We facilitate lively discussions by randomly choosing teens to share, keeping everyone alert and involved throughout the session.
Learning happens in many ways: through videos, music, reading, and hands-on activities designed to help lessons stick. By utilizing a variety of approaches, we make group therapy both efficient and meaningful, equipping every teen to use their new skills in life beyond Bricolage.
One of our core priorities at Bricolage is seeing your teen beyond their symptoms. Every young person has unique strengths, motivations, and goals, and understanding these is central to the care we provide. By truly listening and connecting with the teens we serve, we build trust and positive relationships. This bond is essential for teens to believe in the value of treatment and feel motivated to actively participate in their healing journey.
At Bricolage, we work closely with your teen to foster lasting change in their brain. Through learning healthier habits and developing new skills, they can rewire dysfunctional brain pathways that contribute to difficult symptoms. This kind of deep, neurobiological healing is essential for true recovery. This process can be demanding, but it brings meaningful and lasting benefits.
Medication can be a valuable support in this journey, but we view it as one part of a broader approach, not a standalone fix. Think of it as a helpful boost that aids your teen as they do the important work of learning and practicing the skills needed to overcome their symptoms and thrive.
