Intensive Outpatient Therapy

Our Teen Intensive Outpatient Program runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and our Adult Program from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Program length varies based on clinical need, but averages around 6 weeks. Teens will stay enrolled at their current school while in our program.

What We Treat: Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders in Teens

In 2021, more than 1.2 million Texan children under 17 had mental, behavioral, emotional, or developmental concerns. That's 20% of all youth! At Bricolage Behavioral Health, we provide intensive outpatient therapy (outpatient treatment) for teens and adults in Flower Mound, TX.

It is increasingly challenging to be a teenager today in a world that exposes them to everything from physical bullying to the impacts of the internet and social media. In a recent study, researchers noted high levels of social media usage resulted in worsening mental health outcomes. This included body image concerns, disordered eating, increased alcohol consumption, poor sleep quality, and daytime drowsiness.

Many teens today feel inadequate and might exhibit behaviors of poor mental health, including school avoidance, suicidal ideation, substance use, excessive screen use, and self-harm. Over time, they might feel worthless or like they aren’t good enough. This isn’t true. These can manifest into a variety of disorders like depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

At Bricolage Behavioral Health, we aim to empower your teen to find their strengths and learn healthier ways of coping with their challenges. With the proper treatment and direction, many teens live successful, healthy lives that build upon these pre-existing strengths.

What We Treat: Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders in ADULTS

Adults often find behavioral change harder than during the teen years as behaviors and thought patterns become more entrenched over time. Adult responsibilities and adverse life experiences also start to pile up for many adults over time, leading to worsening mental health or addiction issues.

Many adults do not have the luxury of not working or taking care of family while dealing with their own struggles, which is why we offer Flower Mound's only in-person evening counseling program for those who need more than just once-a-week therapy.

In our intensive groups, our clients work with our master's level therapists and each other to learn and practice functional skills. Our clients come to us because they have found that merely talking about their problems with a therapist or counselor hasn't been enough to help them improve their lives and mental well-being. This is why, at the intensive outpatient level of care, we focus on emotional regulation, anxiety reduction, communication, goal-achievement, coping mechanisms, and related skills that empower our clients to become best version of themselves.

Teens and adults have different needs. This may appear obvious, so why do so many treatment programs apply a one-size-fits-all approach?

Most adults with behavioral disorders will tell you they first began experiencing symptoms before they hit their mid-twenties.

How We Treat: Outpatient Treatment through Intensive Outpatient Therapy

Intensive outpatient therapy, a form of outpatient treatment, is available at Bricolage Behavioral Health. IOP groups are held from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

This level of care is beneficial in developing healthy coping skills with less time commitment than day treatment (partial hospitalization). These skills will create the changes our clients want to see in themselves, and outpatient treatment provides a space where they feel safe, inspired, and supported. Common skills you or your loved one will learn and develop in our intensive outpatient therapy include:

  • Incremental goal setting
  • Emotional regulation
  • Trigger identification
  • Restructuring negative thoughts
  • Self-care
  • Assertive communication
  • Overcoming failure

Consistent practice is the best way for our clients to translate these skills into default behaviors. We give them extensive real-world practice opportunities to create long-lasting change through role-playing, projects, and active engagement with their therapist and peers. We accomplish this through effective, evidence-based components. These include developing a mutually trusting relationship between our clients and their therapist, a mutually agreed-upon philosophy of causation, and mutually agreed-upon mechanisms of change. At Bricolage Behavioral Health, our clients learn to rebuild relationships, create new ones, and engage with those they care about. We facilitate developing a strong sense of meaning and purpose.

The Options Available in Our Outpatient Therapy Program

At Bricolage Behavioral Health, we offer several therapy options at the outpatient level to accomplish the abovementioned goals. When combined, these options allow teens and adults to find healing from mental health and substance use disorders and become better, healthier versions of the people they already are.

Group Therapy: Whole-Group Therapy

Most group therapies designed for teens rely on a round-robin style. This means the therapist speaks to one teen at a time and requires the others to listen passively. Most of the time, this leads to them not listening and lacking the ability to learn from their peers.

At Bricolage Behavioral Health, we provide and value whole-group therapy. This engaging method allows each teen to participate in group therapy, facilitating healing and growth actively. During treatment, teens will participate in focus tasks, project-based work, pair work, and role-play. These activities encourage them to learn from and grow with their peers as they learn real-world skills. Through whole-group therapy, our clients find success outside the walls of therapy.

In addition, they will form bonds with peers who are experiencing similar concerns. Together, they will overcome challenges, learn from each other, and heal by learning these necessary skills.

Support for Families

We recognize that families are essential to teens' success in recovery. This is why, at the outpatient level of care, we involve families through regular communication. Teens need ongoing support from their families to find healing, and we equip families with the tools to provide this support for their children beyond treatment.

The Most Common Forms of Psychotherapy Used at BriColage Behavioral Health

Our primary treatment modalities at Briolage Behavioral Health include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), seeking safety, and exposure therapy. No method is better or worse than another, and a combination of them may help your teen achieve the goals they have for themselves.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a talk therapy that aims to help people understand their thoughts and emotions and how they impact their lives. Through this type of therapy, your teens will learn skills that assist them in changing negative thought patterns into healthier and more productive ones that benefit their goals.

Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is another type of talk therapy based on CBT. It focuses on learning coping skills to help manage intense emotions and promote healthy social relationships. Skills typically taught in DBT include distress tolerance, mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotion regulation.

Seeking safety is a type of CBT used to treat co-occurring post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder. It helps teens attain safety in their thoughts, behaviors, emotions, and relationships while working through their experienced trauma and substance use at the same time.

Exposure therapy is another type of CBT that creates a secure environment for your teen to be exposed to trauma, anxiety, and fears. Often, teens may avoid things, activities, or situations they are afraid of, significantly reducing their quality of life. Facing their fears shows them what they can do.

These are just a few treatment modalities your teen may encounter at Bricolage Behavioral Health. Which ones they encounter will depend on their recovery goals and what will work best for your teen. We will work with your teen to determine what these are.
